Meaningful Music Monday
I love music. As much as art is a part of who I am, so is music. And this has been the case all my life.
I grew up surrounded by music thanks to my dad. He’s an extremely talented guitarist (sadly, I can’t play one chord) and can pretty much play anything. We grew up listening to The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, etc. My love for classic rock probably stems from this – when this is the first form of music you’re exposed to, everything else seems to pale in comparison and becomes a poor man’s version. Yes, I’m a music snob. I believe life is too short to listen to bad music. Especially when there’s so much good stuff out there.
ANYWAY.
The first time music made an imprint on me was when I was 5 or 6. My dad had a record player and collection of vinyls and I used to like looking at their cover art. I stopped to study one I thought was interesting and looking at the track list I decided I needed to hear one of the songs. I figured since it had the word ‘love’ in it, it would be a nice song.
The needle hit the vinyl and a few seconds later I was hit with the heaviest, loudest guitar riff. No warning. Just a bomb of a riff right to your face. And then entered the bass line like an intense heart beat, the bombastic drums and a singer with a wail like no other. Complete sensory overload. The craziest thing I’ve heard. It was so different and as I stared at the faces on the cover art, I listened to the entire roller coaster of a song completely mesmerized. It was awesome. It was shocking. It was mind blowing.
It was Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin.

For 25+ years, it’s remained my favorite song and they my favorite band. Throughout my youth, I regularly listened to Led Zeppelin 2 and 4 and then the rest of their albums. It’s music that holds many memories and many thoughts for me. It’s music that introduced me to music.
My dad has since passed his entire collection down to me and it is one of my favorite possessions. He had 2 of the band’s records in his collection – albums #2 and #4. I have since acquired the rest of them except #1. The elusive #1 that’s evaded me all these years. The hunt continues.
Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love
Led Zeppelin x Snoop Dogg (feat. Pharrell) – Drop It Like It’s A Whole Lotta Love
Led Zeppelin x Notorious B.I.G. – Ramblize
Led Zeppelin x Beastie Boys – Black Sabotage
Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of Immigrant Song for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack (I heart Trent Reznor and Karen O and her voice def. works with Led Zeppelin’s music.)
My friends are mixing it up on the web so check it out!:
